THE INFIDEL had a fantastic opening weekend at the British box office.

The popularity of the film means that screen numbers will double to 60 across the country from today.

Meanwhile, a 3,500 strong audience turned out forThe Infidel's world premiere at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

Stars Omid Djalili, Richard Schiff and script writer David Baddiel greeted media and fans on the red carpet, while a gospel choir and break-dancers entertained the crowds.

Comedians Frank Skinner, Ruby Wax, David Mitchell and Jack Dee were also there.

The premiere treated the audience to stand up sets from the winners of the film's Which Religion is Funniest competition.

There was also an acoustic performance from The Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie and a special routine by Djalili.
