DINING OUT

Believe me, you won’t manage one over the eight!

IT could be billed Surprise Surprise! But a partnership between Manchester eatery Evuna and wine producers Campo Viejo is actually titled Viva El Vino.

Billed as a new wine and dine concept, it offers the opportunity to enjoy some superb Spanish wines matched with appropriate national dishes at an exceptionally low price.

Evuna, based in Deansgate, Manchester, are the only participating restaurant outside London. Guests must put their trust in the chef for either a four-course or eight-course tapas menu with perfectly matched Campo Viejo wines. It’s entirely his or her choice – but you won’t be disappointed.

Provided that the chef is alerted, the menu can be adapted to suit those who eat only fish or vegetarian or have nut allergies.

The eight-course option opened with a wonderful, fruity white reserve cava matched with traditional Spanish cheese from La Mancha, paired with membrillo, the Spanish version of quince.

And we were treated course by course to an informed explanation by Evuna’s proprietor Jane Dowler, something of an expert on Spanish wines.

Next came a spicy white Rioja Viura, teamed with garlic and chilli seabass, which was soon replaced by a fresh but robust Campo Viejo Rose whose partner was a tasty vegetarian tortilla.

So much for the lighter wines, next was the 2006 Campo Viejo crianza, a rich and full bodied red which accompanied a delicious white asparagus dish topped with mushroom and the Spanish cheese Manchego.

As the banquet progressed, the wines became more serious. A 2005 reserva, full of red fruits, was followed by a deeply satisfying 2002 Gran Reserva which set off the vegetable croquetas admirably before we found room for Veduras roasted vegetables with which we enjoyed a Dominio 2004 reserva, red.

Our finale was a delightful Spanish cheesecake topped off with a delicious cava rose.

The cost of our culinary adventure was an incredible £32.50 per head. Had we opted for the four-course menu, that would have set us back only £22.50.

And if you thought that tapas was all about bite-sized portions, think again.

The promotion continues until April 30.
