Bring back Bibi

ISRAEL'S outgoing Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, seems bent on the destruction of his homeland.

He says he is committed to withdrawing from most of the West Bank and East Jerusalem saying, "Everyone knows Israel must withdraw."

Yet he doesn't say who "everyone" is. Even his likely successor, Tzipi Livni, shies away when asked if she supports his prediction, which now includes the Golan Heights.

What worries me is that neither he nor Ms Livni demand that as a precursor for a peace settlement.

What's more, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas rescinds his stated position that he will never accept Israel as a Jewish state. Now I learn that Olmert is to allow 1,000 PA troops into Hebron at the peak Jewish tourist time - ostensibly to "protect" the citizens from a possible Hamas attack.

This, at a time when Hamas has declared it will not recognise Abbas as the president after January 8 and will replace him with one of its own leaders!

So is it not imperative that Israel maintains a strong presence in this holy city and give no more land back if Hamas gets control of the West Bank? The IDF will need land areas to mount a defence if there is a concerted attack by Israel's enemies. Now is not the time to move back to the 1949 borders.

Come back Binyamin Netanyahu - your country needs you.
